THE CHRISTIAN CONFESSION OF GOD

One God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Christian faith is not belief in three gods. Christians worship one God, eternally existing as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Trinity

One divine Being, three Persons

The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. The Father is not the Son; the Son is not the Holy Spirit; and the Holy Spirit is not the Father. Yet Christians confess one God, not three gods.

This is not a mathematical puzzle to solve but the way historic Christianity speaks faithfully about the God revealed in Holy Scripture.

In short: one God in three Persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — equal in divine glory and united eternally in the one being of God.
Knowing the Triune God

Father. Son. Holy Spirit.

The three Persons are not separate gods or competing centres of worship. The one God acts in perfect unity.

THE FATHER

Creator, loving Father and sovereign Lord

The Father is the source and goal of all things. He sends the Son, receives those who come through Christ, and gives every good gift.

THE SON

Jesus Christ, eternal Son and Lord

The eternal Son became truly human without ceasing to be God. Jesus reveals the Father, died for our sins, rose bodily, reigns and will return.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Giver of life and presence of God with His people

The Holy Spirit is fully divine. He glorifies Christ, brings conviction and new life, dwells in believers, produces holiness and equips the Church for witness and service.

The Bible's pattern

Why Christians believe this

Scripture repeatedly presents the Father, Son and Holy Spirit together while insisting that there is only one God. Jesus commands baptism in the one name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the apostolic writings speak of the grace of Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit; and the New Testament identifies both the Son and the Spirit with divine identity and work.

Common questions

Understanding without pretending it is simple

Do Christians worship three gods?

No. Historic Christian faith is monotheistic: there is one God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons who share the one divine being.

Is Jesus less than the Father?

Christian faith confesses the Son as truly God and truly human. In His incarnate mission Jesus willingly obeys the Father, but this does not mean the Son is a lesser kind of deity.

Is the Holy Spirit only a force or influence?

No. Scripture speaks of the Holy Spirit personally: He teaches, guides, speaks, can be grieved, gives gifts and acts with divine authority.

How should Christians pray?

A common biblical pattern is prayer to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. Christian prayer is therefore deeply Trinitarian, while Scripture also records direct address to the Lord Jesus.

Must I understand the Trinity completely before becoming a Christian?

No one comprehends God exhaustively. Christian faith begins by trusting the God who has made Himself known and continues through lifelong learning, worship and discipleship.

The Father sends. The Son saves. The Spirit gives life and empowers witness.

Britain for Christ seeks to depend upon the Father's purpose, proclaim the Son's Gospel and serve in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
