A simple way to read the Bible

You do not need to understand everything at once. Read carefully, pray, ask questions and keep going.

1

Read

Read a manageable passage slowly, noticing repeated words, people, actions and promises.

2

Understand

Ask what the passage says in its literary and historical context before jumping to personal application.

3

Respond

Consider what the passage reveals about God, Christ, humanity, faith, sin, hope and faithful living.

4

Pray

Turn what you have read into prayer: praise, confession, thanksgiving, intercession and obedience.

Four questions for any passage

  1. What does the text actually say?Observe before interpreting.
  2. What did it mean in context?Consider the surrounding passage, book and original setting.
  3. What does it reveal about God and His purposes?Look for the passage's theological centre.
  4. How should I faithfully respond?Apply Scripture in ways consistent with its meaning.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Read Scripture with the Church

Personal Bible reading is important, but Christians also receive Scripture through the teaching, worship and shared life of the local church.
