It is a set of biblical questions to help you observe a church carefully over time. 1. IS THE GOSPEL CLEAR? IS SCRIPTURE HANDLED FAITHFULLY? Ask: - Is the text explained in context? - Can teaching be examined against Scripture? Read: Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; 2 Timothy 4:1-5 3. IS THE TRIUNE GOD CONFESSED? Read: Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-18; 2 Corinthians 13:14 4. ARE LEADERS CHARACTERISED BY BIBLICAL QUALIFICATIONS? Look beyond gifting and platform ability. Read: 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4 5. ARE PRAYER AND WORSHIP REAL PARTS OF CHURCH LIFE? Read: Acts 2:42; Colossians 3:16-17; 1 Timothy 2:1-6 6. ARE CORRECTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY POSSIBLE? Read: Matthew 18:15-20; Galatians 6:1; 1 Timothy 5:19-21 PRACTICAL QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMITTING [ ] Can I find a clear statement of faith? [ ] Can I identify accountable leaders? [ ] Does preaching explain Scripture rather than only quote it? [ ] Can reasonable questions be asked without intimidation? [ ] Is giving voluntary rather than manipulated? [ ] Are safeguarding arrangements visible where appropriate? [ ] Is the church drawing people toward Christ rather than dependence on one personality? [ ] Is there evidence of love, service, prayer, holiness and mission? WARNING PATTERNS Take repeated patterns seriously if: - one leader cannot be questioned; - loyalty to a leader or organisation replaces loyalty to Christ; - money is coerced or hidden; - serious wrongdoing is concealed for reputation; - reasonable questions are labelled rebellion; - members are isolated from family, friends or outside help; - safeguarding or professional care is dismissed as lack of faith.
